Winter is the perfect time to retreat to the bathroom to warm up and chill out. Creating a spa-like sanctuary in your own home can give you the opportunity to de-stress and enjoy some well-deserved self-care.

We’ve put together our top tips on how to create a luxurious spa retreat in your own home:

Our lives are so busy these days that we sometimes forget the simple pleasure of taking time out and retreating to the peace and quiet of a bath. We’re not suggesting you scatter your floor with rose petals, but perhaps dim the lighting, light some candles and pour in a generous measure of bubble bath. We think these American Walnut blinds with Walnut tapes add a warm, elegant feel to a bathroom. Available from Blinds 2Go from £21.35. They are made from ecologically managed wood and lacquered for protection and easy cleaning.

Frameless showers

A walk-in shower with frameless panels looks almost invisible and creates the illusion of more space, which is a fabulous option for a smaller bathroom. This new EauZone Plus Hinge Panel and Door with Radius-20 Side Panel is guaranteed to transform your bathroom into a spa retreat – available from luxury shower company Matki.

Freestanding sinks

A freestanding sink can elevate your bathroom to the next level and transform it into a luxury retreat. Interior design guru, Jo Milton, has chosen this unpolished marble Nobu Basalt Washbasin from Tikamoon from £119 for her own bathroom. We also love her Cole & Son Melville wallpaper, featuring whales inspired from fictional seafaring journeys.

Add a rainfall showerhead

Nothing says spa more than a rainfall shower. Book into a boutique hotel and you will be sure to have a rainfall showerhead in your bathroom, so why not have one at home? This way, you will be able to wash the worries of the day away with the soothing flow of water. We love the look of this beautiful spa-like bathroom from Matki, complete with rainfall showerhead.

Houseplants

A bathroom filled with greenery will exude the feeling of tranquility, as well as creating a healthy atmosphere. Bathrooms tend to have a higher humidity level than other rooms in the house, and sometimes lower levels of light, so choose your plants carefully. Position them on windowsills and shelves or why not even hang them from the ceiling? This stunning bathroom from interior designer, Nicki Bamford-Bowes at @Andthentheywentwild, features a variety of lovely houseplants, as well as incorporating the current trend for understated metallics.

The softest towels

To recreate the feel of a luxury hotel bathroom, upgrade your towels to the best you can afford. These weighty Savoy towels are from The White Company from £28 for a bath towel. Available in white and silver, they are made from Egyptian cotton and finished with a flat-weave borer and satin-stitch trim.

Flowers

Flowers add a touch of romance to spa-like bathrooms. Treat yourself to some fresh flowers or floral scents to give your spirits a lift. Floral and botanical prints are right on trend. We love this Hadley Linen Blooming Violet blind from Blinds 2Go, from £23.25. Add some matching highlights around the room to make it a stunning centerpiece. To keep nice and cosy, add a complimentary, thermal lining.

Create the feel of more space

Mirrored tiles will add a touch of glamour and sparkle to your bathroom, while providing a lovely mirrored surface to reflect your finest perfume bottles. Perhaps more importantly, they reflect the light and brighten the bathroom to create the feel of more space. These Silver Mirrored Bevelled Wall Tiles are available from My Furniture from £29.99 for a box of 22 tiles.

Glamorize your shelving

While shelves are the most practical item in your bathroom, they don’t need to be boring. These Inga mirrored shelves from My Furniture incorporate an internal drawer for storage. They are available in a rectangular format, which can be combined in multiples to create a striking look (from £79.99 per unit). This range also includes a floating, space-saving, storage corner unit (from £89.99).

Luxury bath products

No spa retreat is complete without gorgeously scented bath products. We love the smell of the 100% natural bath and body products from 100 Acres Apothecary, who hand blend in small batches with botanicals and essential oils. Add a small pile of books, like they have done here at boutique hotel No.131 in Cheltenham, and you will surely be in bathroom heaven.
